Still Breda Beban

Still Breda Beban

Published by Site Gallery on the occasion of exhibItion Still 13th May - 20th June 2000

Still illustrates the work of artist Breda Beban from the former Yugoslavia, and is centred round a series of her photographs and video works. In a very uncomplicated yet explicit way she displays the condition of absence. The work is autobiographical and deeply personal - a series of photographs having been selected from hundreds of images taken by Beban during the period 1991-1997. This was a particular significant time in Beban’s life, marked by the intrusion of dramatic social circumstances and tragic events. In September 1991, with the outbreak of civil war, Beban left her home with one suitcase, no money, and no idea about what to do or where to go. Through the generosity of a friend she found herself in a derelict house deep in the hills of Tuscany. The first images in the exhibition record her obsession with a series of farmer’s sheds, with their starkness and bleakness contrasting with the familiar images of charm and beauty of the landscape.
